The NFL players and coaches who have spoken out against the proposed trade of a second-round pick to the New York Jets to Seattle Seahawks for an international free agent are being paid a good deal of money.NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday on “NFL Total Access” that “in the last two years alone, the average salary of the top NFL players in the league has skyrocketed to $2.4 million per season.”
The Seahawks, meanwhile, are paying the top players in their league $2 million a season.
That figure comes from Rapoports sources, but the average NFL player gets a contract of $2,567,000 annually.
It’s not clear how much the Seahawks paid the top 10 players on their list, which was reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport.
Rapoporting’s sources indicated the number is closer to $3 million per year.
It would be the largest salary in NFL history.
It would also be the first time in the history of the league that a top-tier NFL player was paid more than the next-highest-paid player.
In 2016, the Los Angeles Rams paid defensive tackle Greg Robinson $3.5 million per annum.
That figure was surpassed by Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee, who earned $4.5 for his performance on the field in 2016.
The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) has pushed for a salary cap and a new collective bargaining agreement that would include a cap of $70 million for the 2018-19 season.
The proposed trade, which has been opposed by the NFL Players Union and many owners, would send the top picks from the 2017 draft and 2019 draft to the Seahawks.
The draft order would include the second- and third-round picks in 2018, 2019 and 2020, as well as the second, third and fourth overall picks in 2021 and 2022.
The Seahawks would also get an additional second- or third-rounder from the trade.
Seattle is paying $3,333,000 per year for the top two picks in the draft, Rapoported reported.
The $2-million per year average is the highest the NFLPA has ever received.
It was first reported by ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
Rapaports sources indicated that the average player receives a contract that is roughly $2 to $4 million a year.
Rapoport said the trade is “inhumane and disrespectful” and said “the Seattle Seahawks should not be paying top-end free agents, and instead, paying top talent.”
The trade would “significantly reduce the number of players the Seahawks could draft from the 2018 draft, and could even force the team to trade up for a player,” Rapoporters report added.
The Raiders are paying $2M per year on top of the $2 billion they have already committed for the next two years to keep the franchise in Oakland, Rapaporters report said.
